Daniel McGeehan & Mary Quinn

Daniel McGeehan was the youngest known son of Edward (John?) McGeehan and his wife, Ann Boyle (Mary?).

Hugh McGeehan’s 1903 obituary says that his brother Daniel was living in Hazleton at that time.  The 1900 census lists two Daniel McGeehans in Hazleton as well as one in nearby McAdoo; all three Daniels were married to women named Mary (naturally).  However, census records, obituaries, and death notices in Hazleton newspapers help sort out which of these three Daniels was Hugh’s brother.

Our family’s Daniel was born in March 1844 in County Donegal, Ireland, and arrived in the United States around 1857.  He joined his siblings in the Hazleton area, living for a while in Ebervale.  (We haven’t yet found him in the 1860 census.)

About 1868, he married Mary Quinn, who was born in 1851 in Pennsylvania to Charles Quinn and his wife Bridget, both Irish immigrants themselves.  Daniel and Mary were enumerated in Luzerne County in the 1870 census with no children.  By 1880, however, they had an adoptive daughter, Isabella (Bella) Givins, in their household.

The 1900 census is the only one that includes both Daniel and Mary with their sole child, Anna, born in 1885.  (The census indicates that Mary had borne only one child, with one surviving: Anna.)

Mary died five years later, and her obituary names husband Daniel and daughter Anna as her survivors, in addition to her mother, Mrs. Charles Quinn, and sister, Mrs. Dennis Conahan (Catherine).

By 1910, Daniel and Anna were living as boarders in the Hazleton home of Catherine Conahan.  Sometime between then and 1920, Daniel moved into the home of his niece, Bridget McGeehan McGlynn, daughter of his sister, Rose; he was enumerated there in the 1920 census. His 1923 obituary also states that he lived with his niece Bridget and notes that his daughter Anna was very ill and living in Philadelphia; it also mentions his adoptive daughter, Bella.  We have no further information on what happened to Anna.
