Hugh McGeehan‘s 1903 obituary reported that he had a sister, Susan Lockman, who was living in Hazleton. In the 1900 census, only one Susan Lockman (or any other possible spelling of the surname) can be found: 70-year-old widowed Susan Lockman, born in Ireland and living with her three daughters, Anna, Josephine, and Jetta, and “son” Robert. This, plus Susan’s 1904 obituary and the death certificates of her children which identify her as Susan McGeehan, establish her as Hugh’s sister.
According to her obituary, Susan appears to have married Thomas Lockman in 1855 at The Homestead in West Hazleton, though we have yet to find a marriage record for the couple. They continued to live in Hazleton in the coming years and were enumerated in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses along with their growing family. Thomas died in May 1892 after sustaining a leg injury in a mining accident.
Susan’s obituary identifies her birthplace as “Derlaconnell” in County Donegal; this is probably the townland of Derryleconnell near the Atlantic coast.
