Rose McGeehan & Peter McGlynn

Rose McGeehan was born in County Donegal in Derryleconnell in the parish of Lettermacaward.  She was the eldest known daughter of John and Mary McGeehan, judging from her age in U.S. census records (though we admittedly have next to nothing about her sisters, Mary and Bridget).

After emigrating to America about 1852, Rose married Peter McGlynn, another Irish immigrant, probably around 1856 in the Hazleton area.  As were so many men who came to Luzerne County, Peter was a coal miner.  He and Rose had only two children before he died sometime in the 1870s.  Their son James appears to have also died by 1880.

After Peter’s death, Rose lived with her daughter, Bridget, and son-in-law Daniel Harkins (born 1853, Ireland) and six grandchildren (Rose, Frank, Winifred, William, Nellie, and Jennie).  Rose told census enumerators that she had only one child still living.

After Rose’s death, her younger brother Daniel eventually moved in with the widowed Bridget, where he was included in her household in the 1920 census enumeration.

Both Rose and Bridget are buried in Saint Gabriel’s Catholic Cemetery in Hazleton.
